Aylmers today

This is the index page to the 'Aylmers today' section of the website.

Principally this let you explore the area where I live, but there's also a page with stories from a number of Aylmers around the globe. You can access the guestbook here too.

So we start with a page on the area where we live, Forest Gate. Since my granfather lived here too, and I was born a few hundred yards away, this district - and the borough of Newham in which it is situated - has its own little place in Aylmer history.

However a major reason why I live here is the quality of its external environment - specifically, the area of heathland known as Wanstead Flats. In many ways it's unremarkable square mile of scrub, but what is remarkable is that it has survived in this crowded patch of east London.

East London generally has been seen, not fairly in my view, as London's ugly duckling. What is undoubtedly true is that there have been few opportunities to give east London the shot in the arm that has revitalised many other areas of the capital. That is changing now, as works for the east-London centred 2012 Olympics and Paralympics gather pace. You can see how on my Olympics page.

But my guess is that many readers want to hear about other Aylmers, and those descended from Aylmers, rather than about me. You can do that by going to my Other Aylmers page.

That just leaves the guestbook, which you can access here. But I'd be just as pleased if you emailed me from the link in the bottom bar.
