2 January 2006: the site of special scientific
interest was cleared of gorse bushes late in 2005 so that it could revert, in time, to
heathers.
 |
5 February 2006: the junior football pitches
at the north end of Aldersbrook Road. Where there are now houses,
the maternity hospital where I was born once
stood.
 |
2 March 2006: a cold morning at Alexandra Pond, which is iced over -
and even lower than it was at this time last year.
 |
17 April 2006: the area west of Centre Road hosts fun fairs at circuses. This
truck shows iconography from the 1990s TV series 'Only Fools and
Horses'.
 |
13 May 2006: there is one pub beside the Flats,
the Golden Fleece at the Manor Park end of Capel Road. It's OK, but given its situation
it's an acceptable pub rather than a great one.
 |
3 June 2006: another hot day in early June, at sunset. Near Alexandra pond,
looking towards Leytonstone.
 |
23 July 2006: What used to be Alexandra Pond (a few puddles are out of sight).
Please, stop flying, and don't buy air conditioning, you're only making it worse
for the young people on the old lake bed.
 |
20 August 2006: The former model yacht pond by Dames Road.
The pond was relined in 2002 (hooray) and renamed the Jubilee pond (boo).
It is designed to be wildlife friendly.
 |
24 September 2006: some of the horse chestnut trees along Capel Road
continue to thrive, but others are a sorry sight, laid low by drought and
infection, as this picture shows.
|
7 October 2006: only one tiny patch of the flats is in Newham;
it contains this fine run of beech trees by Forest View Road.
 |
2 November 2006: this year's Newham Council Fireworks
night was held on the flats, west of Centre Road. Here the floodlighting is made
ready for the big event.
|
2 December 2006: a little-known path heads across the base
of some old (wartime?) huts, now lost in gorse, at the Wanstead end.
